Ancient rugs are not simple furnishing objects, but true hand-knotted masterpieces that tell centuries of history, art, and tradition. In our Verona showroom, for years we have been selecting, restoring, and enhancing antique Persian and Oriental rugs, helping our clients to recognize the authenticity and value of each piece.
An antique rug is unique because:
It is entirely handmade, knot by knot, without the use of machines.
It uses natural materials: wool, silk, and high-quality cotton, dyed with vegetable pigments.
It has traditional motifs that tell the stories of Persian, Caucasian, or Anatolian cultures.
Over time, it develops a patina that enhances its beauty.
Owning an antique rug means preserving a fragment of history, an unrepeatable work of art.
Often online or at some auctions we find carpets described as "semi-antique" or "vintage" to encourage sales. But what really distinguishes an antique carpet from one that is simply old?
Antique, Over 100 years, high quality, handcrafted, fine materials, historical value.
Old/Vintage, 50-80 years, Good workmanship but not old enough to be considered valuable.
Vintage/Semi-antique, commercial terms often misleading.
Also beware of well-made recent copies: some new carpets are artificially aged, faded in the sun, sheared or even painted to look antique. However, this type of treatment ruins the quality and durability of the carpet.
In our carpet washing and restoration workshop in Verona, when we receive a carpet to treat, we always carry out a careful evaluation. Here’s what we check:
Retouched coloring: carpets with visible weft painted to cover wear.
Missing knots or damaged areas: often caused by moths or lack of maintenance.
Worn fringes and edges: if not restored, they risk causing the carpet to lose stability.
Many carpets that look perfect in photos may hide excessive restorations or serious defects.
An antique carpet should be handled with care:
Professional cleaning every 2-3 years to remove dust and prevent moths.
Regular inspection of fringes and edges to prevent the knots from fraying.
Never leave it in damp or closed environments: the absence of light and air encourages moth infestation.
