Antique Rugs: How to Identify Them, Why They Are Valuable, and What Sets Them Apart from Old Rugs
Antique rugs are not just decorative items—they are true hand-knotted masterpieces that tell stories of centuries of history, art, and tradition. In our Verona showroom, we have long specialized in selecting, restoring, and showcasing antique Persian and Oriental rugs, helping our clients recognize the authenticity and value of each piece.
An antique rug is unique because:
It is entirely handmade, knot by knot, without the use of machines.
It uses natural materials: high-quality wool, silk, and cotton dyed with plant-based pigments.
It features traditional patterns that reflect Persian, Caucasian, or Anatolian cultures.
Over time, it develops a patina that enhances its beauty.
Owning an antique rug means preserving a piece of history—an unrepeatable work of art.
You’ll often find rugs labeled as “semi-antique” or “vintage” online or at auctions to encourage sales. But what truly distinguishes an antique rug from one that is simply old?
Antique: Over 100 years old, high quality, handcrafted, made with fine materials, and holds historical value.
Old/Vintage: 50–80 years old, well-made but not old enough to be considered truly valuable.
Vintage/Semi-antique: Commercial terms that can often be misleading.
Be cautious of well-made modern copies: some new rugs are artificially aged—sun-faded, shaved, or even painted—to appear antique. However, such treatments damage the rug’s quality and longevity.
In our rug cleaning and restoration workshop in Verona, every rug we receive undergoes a careful evaluation. Here’s what we look for:
Retouched colors: rugs with painted warp or weft to cover wear.
Missing knots or damaged areas: often caused by moths or lack of maintenance.
Worn fringes and edges: if not restored, they can compromise the rug’s structural integrity.
Many rugs that appear perfect in photos may hide excessive restoration or serious flaws.
An antique rug requires careful attention:
Professional cleaning every 2–3 years to remove dust and prevent moth damage.
Regular inspection of fringes and edges to avoid unraveling of the knots.
Never store it in damp or closed spaces: lack of light and air encourages moth infestations.
